Although I have been knitting for quite some time (40 years+) I have been yearning to expand my knitting portfolio. I'd like to learn more about lace, fair isle, slip stitch, mosaic, intarsia. Recently I made some changes to my knitting techniques. I am left handed, self taught, and... I hate to purl. I have recently taught myself to knit continental. I love it. I believe it has taught me to exercise the true economy of the stitch.
My next goal was learning to love the purl stitch. Historically, my way of avoiding the purl stitch was knitting in the round, or... knit side to side ( ambidextous knitting). This required a significant amount of pattern translation, but... hey I din't have to purl much! The purl stitch is infinately more tolerable when done continental style.
My final goal is to expand and improve my knowledge about various knitting techniques. I think the Barbara Walker "Learn to Knit Afghan" is the perfect project. 63 squares, 8 sections of knit - purl combos, cables, lace work, mosaic patterns, slip stitch, twisted stitches, short rows.
This is my journey...
The yarn: King Cole Superwash Merino Blend (doubleknit). A variet of colours. I picked this yarn primarily because I want to give it to my Mom as a gift when it is finished. The superwash factor is more in keeping with the way it will be kept clean. Mom is a quilter, and wanted colours that were random, and keeping with a "Patchwork" quilt theme.
Section 1 - Knit Purl Combinations Square 1 - Striped Garter Stitch
Well, this square was very much just the basics, folks... and therefore pretty boring to knit. However, I did practise on keeping my edge neat and tidy.
